We have a huge American hangover. Its past time we tried "balancing" between the US and China and rework our policies to reflect a multipolar world.

Pakistan is actively considering a proposal to import 10 percent of its crude oil and petrol from the United States in a bid to mitigate tariff impact, address trade imbalances, and support the country's exports, which have recently reached $6 billion, The News reported citing official sources from the Ministry of Energy. The move comes after the US imposed a 29% tariff on Pakistan, in addition to a 10% baseline tariff. However, the Trump administration has suspended these tariffs for 90 days, allowing room for negotiations. As per the report, the government has consulted with stakeholders, including refineries and il marketing companies (OMCs), and finalised the proposal to import 10% of crude and petrol from the US. The proposal will soon be tabled for approval by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC). The trade deficit between Pakistan and the US stands at $3 billion, with the imbalance resulting in the imposition of tariffs by the US across 180 countries. To mitigate the impact, around 75 countrie: have agreed to negotiate with the US to reduce the deficit and avoid these tariffs, which will take effect after the 90-day period. This weekend we had a open, small & informal gathering with our local #XR group. There was an older gentleman there for the first time, who was obviously very torn about the state of the world.

He came to us out of hopelessness - he teared up when trying to express his desperation. But he was also still committed to one-issue campaigning.

He opened his introduction by stating that XR is, in his opinion, making things too political. We politely disagreed. (he talked about the importance of indigenous peoples, but balked at the suggestion that the Palestinians are also part of that struggle)

He'd have benefited from participating in collective action, but I think he wasn't at that point yet. He obviously left the meeting a bit disapointed by our insistence on broad political action.

This piece by Ernesto van Peborgh is more or less where I am at on all this - #RegenerativeAnthropology and all. One particular point I liked: he uses the term #Metacrisis instead of #polycrisis, to capture that it’s all one big crisis. I agree, it’s better. Will use it too from now on

In 2003 a ban on all tobacco advertising was introduced and has arguably worked. I believe continued fossil fuel usage will kill more people than smoking.

The transient fossil fuels spike set on a 16,000 year timeline, with human muscle and firewood before around 1750 and a big ol’ question mark in the space beyond the next century. The spike goes to a value of 1, representing the point in the not too distant future when we will have extracted the most it is possible to extract in a given year.

Late #Spring in #Pakistan, & the government is already considering shutting schools for an early summer break due to the #heatwave.

Astonishing: the Gov is admitting temperature surges of 4-7C (7-13F) above the current heatwave are to occur in the coming few days.

This is what I kept warning! An avg rise of 1.5C means swings of 5-10C making that happen, and in heatwaves or cold snaps thats deadly!

@ProjectFearlessness #Pakistan replaced anywhere between 20-40% of its energy production with rooftop #solar in 2024 alone.

Its been so rapid, despite entrenched fossil lobbies, the Gov has had to cancel future coal and gas power projects, and renegotiate contracts with current ones to lower their prices or just shutter them

No amount of lobbying or narrative building can beat cold hard science and economics.

Gestern sind die Hitzeschutz - Außenjalousien angekommen. Diese werden noch diese Woche an den Dachfenstern montiert.

Versuche energisch, mich für die kommende Hitzewelle im Sommer vorzubereiten! Wien wird bald wieder zu einem heißen Pflaster. Wir erleben die Klimakrise ungebremst, daran kann eigentlich niemand mehr zweifeln.
