I am asking for photos of your #RetroComputing battle stations to fill my thirst that I can not fill musket due to apartament space. Screw you, walls!

Oh look, a random relic from aeons ago: Original #SunMicrosystems sign from the 1980s featuring the 1984 logo.
It was outdoors for soooo long that the labeling faded away nearly completely so I had to re-apply it and accidentally upgraded to the 1996 logo. Oops...
Did I mention that I collect weird random old stuff?
#retrocomputing #c64
Nice! I managed to get a good dump of a deeply scratched cover disc!
Do you guess what's on there based on the image name?!
@patrick My view on #retrocomputing is that fun matters more than purity and you will always need a non-retro component to make it connect to the modern world.
Hey we’re using routers and fiber already so I don’t mind if there is one more translation step! Like the Amiga or C64 just write to a serial port and in the middle there’s an ESP32 that has a bazillion times more CPU power that does the http networking/encryption bridge.
@santiago depending on what you mean by #retrocomputing, "public key" might be prohibitive already.
Otherwise http://www.nncpgo.org/ might be a suitable building block, with BBS (fido technology networks, or any of the other inter-BBS protocols of back then) or even usenet message processing (just nncp instead of uucp) on top.

As you may remember, RC-BOX BBS - the world's first and (currently) only RC2014 based BBS - has been struggling with connectivity issues.
The good news: I have finally been able to successfully mitigate these.
Some background info: in October last year, I decided to do some maintenance on the system, updating my WiFi modem firmware and replacing the SC132 serial I/O module (using a 6.144 KHz crystal for a fixed 9600 bps) with its cousin, the SC110 serial I/O module which features a CTC chip so it can dynamically set any baud rate.
Turns out that while the module is techincally 100% okay, it sometimes locks up when being used with the BYE.COM program for CP/M.
I think this has to do with BYE.COM setting the CTC to the selected bps during initializiation (which happens after each hangup). For some reason, this often works but occasionally causes the SIO/2 to lock up.
Sometimes, without any reason, BYE.COM would drop into an +++ATH loop although no one was connected, not being able to actually perform the AT command.
It took me weeks to finally realize this, because I was so sure the problem originated from the Zimodem firmware and because the issue only showed up occasionally. It was very annyoing to debug.
So as a result of this finding, I've put the SC132 with the fixed 9600 bps back into the system. Since then, no more of these issues occurred.
As always, you can find all info on how to connect to RC-BOX BBS in my profile info.
P.S.: so now I think the problem originates from the BYE.COM code. But since everything is working properly again, I don't have the desire to dig into the BYE.ASM code any time in the future. There are other projects that I'd like to go on with first.

Is there a modern equivalent to newsgroups that is still minimalist?
I’d like something in the #GeminiProtocol spirit. Like just sync .gmi files as messages in a structured way. You need an authorized public key to write.
Clients should be able to read and write on #retroComputing devices even if server and the bridge to reach it could be more advanced (like an ESP32 or a Pi to handle sockets and signing)

I've been playing with the ZX Spectrum recently (well, the Spectrum core for the Mister, which is quite enjoyable once you manage to crate a realistic looking configuration for the Retrotink 4k).
A surprise find was Horace in the Mystic Woods. This game was originally released for the Psion 3 in 1995 and was ported to the Spectrum in 2010. It's remarkably good, both graphically and from a gameplay perspective.
The gameplay is a pretty standard single screen platformer where you have to pick up some objects, and once you pick them up a door opens that allows you to move on to the next level.
The controls are very responsive, which is not something you can say about all Spectrum games. The movement is very slippery, but that's intentional and makes the games more interesting. There are a few places where you have to make a small jump up to a platform but end up bouncing away from it instead. But it's not too bad.
It's one of those games where you know precisely what you did wrong, so you just go 'one more time, this time I'll definitely beat the level'.
I spent more time than I expected with this one, and I'll definitely come back to it.
The game is available in itch.io: https://bobs-stuff.itch.io/horace-in-the-mystic-woods
