A Love Letter To A Darkened Tree

A few years ago, I got ill, pretty ill and I've never fully recovered. As someone who has always been ferociously independent, this sucked ass to say the least. I couldn't leave the house but I needed to have something of my own. So, I started taking photos of this tree from the window. These photos have been taken over the course of a year and a bit - one of them you've seen before but I put it in the collection because it's one of my favourites. Thankfully, now I can leave the house and take pictures of other things! Not as often as I'd like to or as far as I'd like to go, but it's better than it was.
I'd like to dedicate this to my partner, who like this tree, has always been a constant, no matter what has happened over these years but who, unlike this tree, does not have branches. Enough about him because he'll start to think I like him or something.
Anyway, have hope and my wish for all of you is that you have a tree in your life too.

TL;DR - Got sick. Photographed a tree for over a year. Still sick but doing better. Tree is still a tree. Partner is a kind of tree.

08/03/2025 - An evening walk up Carn Ealasaid in Aberdeenshire for sunset. I love the hills round the upper reaches of the River Don. Another good day weather wise for a walk. We made the top just before the sun went to bed. We sat and had our tea. Stayed a bit over an hour and watched the sky darken. Cloudier than I would have liked and moon overhead so didn't get that dark. On the way back the sound of lapwings filled the air. A good trip.

View back down the track we were heading up. Heather hills. The River Don down below. Evening light.
Getting high up the hill now. Short heather and a patch of snow. Cairngorms in the distance.
Top of Carn Ealasaid. It's a flattish short heather top. Photo is of one of us and the setting sun just peaking out in a cloudy sky.
About an hour after sunset. We had had our butties and a brew and it was time to head back down. Photo is of one of us giving a thumbs up and a small cairn, both lit by headtorch in a darkening sky.

07/03/2025 - Day off work. We headed to the hills. A fine loop up and round Peter Hill on a sunny day in Aberdeenshire. Mild with little wind, just a really nice day for a walk. We plonked down in the heather and had our butties. It was quiet on the hill, I was happy. We saw a lovely adder on the way up enjoying the sun. Good birds too, red kite and snow bunting on top, skylarks everywhere, grey wagtail and dipper on the river near the end. Top day out.

An adder taking in some early spring warmth from the sun. It seemed calm enough but we didn't get too close and moved on quickly so not to disturb it.

02/03/2025 - Hill of Tillymorgan. Slowly making my way round the Humps of Aberdeenshire after sunset. As usual we made the top a bit early so sat and had our tea and spent an hour chatting and watching the sun slowly go down. It's not a big hill but the view all round of Aberdeenshire from the trigpoint is pretty great.

Photo of the trigpoint at the top of the hill. My rucksack is against it. The light of the setting sun is nice. Bennachie is in the distance looking ace. 9 years since my last time here!

01/03/2025 - A nice walk up the Buck today, a fine hill on the border between Aberdeenshire and Moray. The sunshine was lovely on the way up. We had our tea on top and watched the sun set. Dark on way back down. Stars were really good. Not much moon and the night sky is Bortle 3 here so nice and dark compared to home.

Near the start of our walk. It's an open landscape here. There's a deserted farm in the distance. Heather and grass with an old stone wall running through the shot. Not easy to make a living round here. More a way of life.
Nearly at the top. View across the last section of heather and peat hags to the pointy top of the Buck. It looks fine in the evening light.
View from the high lands. Low late sunlight makes the hills beyond look golden. There's a strip of snow laying on the next hill, which is appropriately named Hill of Snowy Slack.
The rocky top of the Buck. Getting dark now. Mrs Spaceways and the trigpoint silhouetted against the twilight sky. Venus and a crescent moon beyond.
