So, I encountered a #TrafficSignal phasing this morning that I don't remember having noticed before, and am wondering how common it is.

The setup: There's a bidirectional sidepath along a stroad. Drivers turning left off the stroad onto a side street have a permissive left while sidepath users have a walk signal. This is a problem, but is not the problem I'm focused on rn...

800 people take part in walking protests across Bearna, Furbo, An Spidéal and Inverin

"I'm literally the closest house to the school and I can't let me kids walk to school"

What a damning indictment of both Galway County Council and the Road Safety Authority.

"What we are witnessing is a form of societal resignation. We tolerate a level of road danger that curtails the freedom of children to move through their communities. This is a moral issue. When we fail to police motor offences, when we design streets around the convenience of cars rather than the safety of people, we make a clear choice: to prioritise speed and flow over life and freedom."

"To pause for a moment and consider that 54 people were killed using active transport last year, while no national emergency plan was implemented, is to realise that these deaths are factored in as the cost of a car-centric culture, where no impediment to driver convenience will be tolerated."

Excellent piece by Keith Adams of the Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice.

"Research suggests the scheme may be more popular than thought, with consultations dominated by a loud minority"

"...the first year of a scheme in Wales where the speed limit on urban roads was lowered to 20mph resulted in about 100 fewer people killed or seriously injured."

PSA: Secure your #doggo safely in the #car when you are driving! One old man in #Essex is now dead, and a second going to #prison for first time in life at age *82* (until then never had a criminal record nor any motoring offences) as he didn't do this and knocked down a #motorcyclist trying to get the #dog back under control

BBC NewsArdleigh crash driver Norman McAndrew jailed for killing bikerA court hears how Norman McAndrew, 82, swerved across the road when the pet jumped up at him.

"The driver served nine months, I got a life sentence" - harrowing testimony on RTÉ Radio 1 just now from the mother of a 16 year old boy who was killed by a driver.

The justice system is letting down the families of road violence victims and hampering efforts to improve road safety.

I know there's legal/privacy issues, but there are times I feel the Police /should/ name and shame commercial companies who are driving work #vans around without #insurance (the driver claimed to the officers he only bought the #van that day, but it already had his companys branding *and* he was wearing a branded T-shirt 🤡 ).

If this "entrepreneur" doesn't bother to insure the van, what other insurance is he lacking for the #building work he is doing?
