Finished our GURPS campaign on Monday, with a catastrophic ending due to a bit of confusion. With hindsight, my character should have emptied a magazine of his enchanted assault rifle on the mysterious NPC when he had the chance, no question asked. The only reason I did not was because as a player I found it an anticlimatic ending and wanted some exposition, but this opened the door to another character summoning a horde of creatures we lost control of and in the ene the world is toast. "Han shot first" will be added to my list of reminders when playing.

Campaign generation by randomized GURPS sourcebook

This table was inspired by a quote from Robin D. Laws’ saying

When in doubt, blindfold yourself, take any two GURPS sourcebooks off the shelf at random, and combine the results.

Ok, this is a bit pointless but also… not. I mean, who has a d140 anyway? Or in fact even so many GURPS books? But I wanted to list all the GURPS books, excluding some of the sub-books for different lines, no matter how good they are (so e.g. no Discworld Also, and none of the Traveller supplements EXCEPT Interstellar Wars, which is a distinct enough setting in my book).

I bet I missed some.

So what is it? Just a list of all GURPS sourcebooks except the most mechanical.

I’ve been thinking of adding some quality fan-made books as well, which are floating around the net. I bet one could get some good stuff out of those as well.

I never really cared for GURPS as a rule system, but I always love using their sourcebooks as a starting point to work out ideas for my own games. And most of the stuff is indeed so generic that I can easily rework things into DnD, Traveller, Shadowrun, or what have you. So take a d140 (sigh, or go to a website that does it for you) and roll up your next campaign.

I realized something about #GURPS today.

I prefer my #TTRPG games to be sandboxes. I want to play/GM in a world where PCs can go anywhere, and do anything.

And what I realized is that #GURPS takes that concept even further, because it does away with the restraints of classes in #DND, #PathFinder, and similar games. #GURPS turns your PC itself into a sandbox.

You got bored of being a fighter? Okay, just leave the Fighters' Guild and join the Paladins and train with them instead!

After having flipped through my basic #GURPS Characters book, I've come to realize what I think is the problem with GURPS adaption.

Most people say it's very crunchy, and I'm sure that's a factor. But what really stood out to me when it comes to character creation, is that there are SO MANY OPTIONS because of the classless nature of it. ANYTHING in the book could be relevant to the character you're creating, meaning you should read basically ALL OF IT in order to be able to make a character.

@enfors I used a lot of the "original" non-box-set DF material in a #gurps campaign or two.

It's quite good, but note that the characters as written are both very high-powered, and still can be taken down semi-easily enough due to how GURPS works. The D&D emulation only goes so far…

I'm also not a fan of the magic system at all, but the convenience of just using the box set would probably short-circuit my tinkering urges for at least a few sessions.

One recommendation would be to take that "Dungeon Parkour" literal, and put in some decent chases and escapes. (I have to fudge the timing there a bit occassionally, the GURPS one second turns are a harsh mistress)

It's hard to find #DungeonFantasy reviews on YouTube (which I where I usually go for reviews), but I nevertheless decided to take the plunge and order the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying System (powered by #GURPS), despite the heavy 50+ USD shipping (ugh!)

Looking forward to reading through it when it arrives, should hopefully be by Friday next week. Anyone have any experience with it?
