To bolster his efforts to control elections,
Trump has stacked the Department of Justice ( #DOJ ) with officials who have supported his baseless claims of rampant voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election
and who may have worked to overturn state election results on behalf of his campaign.

These include top officials like Attorney General #Pam #Bondi and FBI Director #Kash #Patel
— both of whom would not say who won the 2020 election during their confirmation hearings.

But it also includes those selected to lead offices that enforce federal laws protecting the right to vote.

Trump nominated #Harmeet #Dhillon, one of his loyal allies who has been involved in dozens of lawsuits challenging voting rights laws, redistricting and election processes,
to lead the Civil Rights Division.

Often referred to as the “crown jewel” of the DOJ, the division is core to protecting civil rights and liberties.

Dhillon has yet to be confirmed,
but the Civil Rights Division has already abruptly shifted away from defending voting rights.

So far, it’s dropped voting rights lawsuits against Texas, Virginia and Alabama.

It also retracted a previous request to participate in a lawsuit over unfair voting maps in Louisiana that’s set to be heard by the Supreme Court.

Weiner, the Brennan Center director, said that the country,
even in Trump’s first term,
never had a DOJ so readily turned into “the president’s personal law firm.”

“Which is just not what the DOJ is.
It’s just not what anyone has understood the DOJ to be,” Weiner said.

“But it is incredibly risky.”

In future elections, such officials may be more willing to not act if voting rights are threatened,
or could oppose efforts to protect voting rights.

They may also be more likely to pursue criminal investigations, and even prosecutions, against voters and election administrators over spurious allegations of fraud.

‘Unqualified henchmen’:
fears rise as Trump names far-right podcaster as FBI deputy director

Fears over the future direction of the FBI have intensified after Donald Trump announced that a far-right podcaster, #Dan #Bongino, who has never served in the bureau, would become its next deputy director.

Bongino, a former New York police officer and Secret Service agent who provided security to Presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama, is best known as a conservative commentator who has vocally supported Trump’s false claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.
His appointment as deputy to the newly confirmed director, #Kash #Patel, marks the first time in the bureau’s 117-year history that the second-in-command post has not been held by one of its senior agents.

It further increased fears – already high following Patel’s confirmation as director – that the administration would attempt to use the bureau to pursue its political enemies.

“Donald Trump just named far-right MAGA podcaster Dan Bongino, a notorious conspiracy theorist who promoted the lie that the 2020 election was ‘stolen,’ to serve as Deputy Director of the FBI. God help us all,” posted the X account Republicans Against Trump.

#CPAC has largely abandoned its libertarian-leaning roots to embrace the aggressive authoritarianism of Donald Trump, the MAGA movement, and its overseas partners.
This year’s conference is triumphalist in tone -- not surprising given Trump’s election victory and combative first 30 days.

Speaker after speaker dutifully repeated Trump’s claims that his election will usher in a new “golden age” for America.

Speaker after speaker repeated false DOGE claims about uncovering massive “waste, fraud, and abuse” in government spending.

The crowd cheered every time a speaker celebrated the Senate confirmation of FBI Director #Kash #Patel, who was embraced by Senate Republicans despite evidence that he committed perjury during his confirmation hears when asked about the ongoing purge of career officials from the FBI.

People ForCPAC 2025 Day One: Trump Triumphalism, Trumpish LiesTriumphalism and lies marked MAGA leaders' celebration of Donald Trump's first 30 days on day one of this year's Conservative Political Action Conference.

When Donald Trump's FBI director nominee, #Kash #Patel, appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday, his own words were thrown back at him.

But while he admitted to saying a few of them, he also claimed Democrats were "making up lies."

Thursday afternoon, MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace came with the receipts.

When a lawmaker read the quote aloud, Wallace showed the video clip it corresponded to.

She wondered why there's a "disconnect" with Republicans "being all-in" as Trump's nominees threaten law enforcement functions.

Former federal prosecutor Kristy Greenberg replied: "That is not a political party. It's a cult. And it's a cult of personality."

Former FBI assistant director for counterintelligence, Frank Figliuzzi, revealed that as they were speaking, some of the most experienced intelligence experts were being forced out.

There are very senior people in senior positions in the FBI headquarters building who are being told to either resign or retire or accept a demotion,"
said Figliuzzi.

"There are also field commanders that are affiliated with the Mar-a-Lago case or other Trump-related cases, who are being encouraged to do the same.

So, we're already seeing this play out."

He went on to say that Republicans should watch themselves because they could end up on the wrong side of Patel's leadership.

"I have to wonder if these Republican senators, who seem to all be on board for Patel, are going to regret their decision when they one day get sideways with the president and the president sics Kash Patel and the FBI on them.

They are going to regret their decision because that's the kind of man that Kash Patel is," said Figliuzzi.

He also confessed a concern about mission creep.

"There are FBI agents on the streets with ICE and border patrol, and they're doing things that aren't anywhere near the FBI mission," Figliuzzi said.

"And the problem with that is there are certain authorities that border patrol and ICE have that the FBI simply does not have.

There are certain warrantless authorities that govern their work."

Wallace continued to be shocked that Republicans would be so willing to turn the post over to someone who has such little regard for basic things like classified documents.

"You couldn't get between Bill Barr and a camera when he was talking about how screwed Donald Trump was in Mar-a-Lago.

What has happened, I guess?
Is it Trump winning?
I mean, what has happened is that these people don't think the FBI should function as a law enforcement agency?" Wallace asked.

News organizations are bracing for the incoming Trump administration to go after journalists’ sources and take legal action against them.

In an email shared with Semafor, Axios’ senior counsel told staff that the news organization anticipates the new administration will attempt to force reporters to out their sources,
will ramp up lawsuits against news organizations for defamation,
and could charge journalists with crimes using the Espionage Act.

“We anticipate more aggressive government efforts to investigate leaks
— which could include a wave of subpoenas seeking journalists’ phone records, documents, and testimony,”
senior newsroom counsel Brian Westley wrote in an email to staff.

“Of particular concern: [Stories] involving unnamed sources that disclose government information without authorization
— including sensitive conversations including the president or other top officials.”

“This stuff is NO JOKE.
The framework of legal protections for journalists we live under is relatively recent and under real threat.
One bad court case could have a big impact,
so it’s important for everybody to be careful and aware of the risks,”
the company said.

Media organizations are increasingly on high alert as multiple incoming members of the administration have expressed a willingness to use the tools of their office to pursue legal action against journalists.

#Brendan #Carr, Donald Trump’s pick for Federal Communications Commission chair, said he wants to explore whether to strip local stations of their broadcast licenses,

while #Kash #Patel, who Trump has tapped to lead the FBI, has said he wants “to come after the people in the media who lied about American citizens, who helped Joe Biden rig presidential elections.”

As has been well documented,
Trump’s nominees could also have broad license to interfere in the major media mergers many companies are itching to do over the next several years.

At least one news organization seemed to want to get out of Trump’s way preemptively.

On Saturday, media insiders were shocked when ABC News agreed to pay $15 million to settle a defamation suit brought by Trump over inaccurate claims made by anchor George Stephanopoulos,
one most media lawyers thought the organization could have won in court

C.IMChuck Darwin (@cdarwin@c.im)The current FBI Director, Christopher Wray, was appointed by Donald Trump during his first term. The FBI Director serves a 10-year term, so Wray is not scheduled to depart until 2027. The purpose of having a 10-year term is to insulate the position from political pressures. Trump, however, is unhappy with Wray for a variety of reasons. At the top of the list is Wray's oversight of the FBI raid of Mar-a-Lago, which revealed that Trump was storing highly classified documents in a bathroom. Trump was later indicted based, in part, on evidence collected in the raid. (A federal judge appointed by Trump later dismissed the case.) On November 30, Trump announced his intention to replace Wray with Kash Patel. Trump considered appointing Patel as Deputy FBI Director at the end of his first term. But the move was blocked by former Attorney General Bill Barr. “I categorically opposed making Patel deputy FBI director. I told [Trump Chief of Staff] Mark Meadows it would happen ‘over my dead body,'" Barr wrote in his book. Barr said that Patel lacked any qualifications for the job. What Patel lacks in experience, he makes up for in subservience and loyalty to Trump. He validates Trump's conspiratorial view of the FBI. In his book, "Government Gangsters," Patel called the FBI "so thoroughly compromised that it will remain a threat to the people unless drastic measures are taken." Trump endorsed the book on Truth Social, calling it "the roadmap to end the Deep State's reign In a podcast appearance promoting the book, Patel vowed to "find the conspirators, not just in government but in the media." He said that "[w]e're going to come after the people in the media who lied about American citizens who helped Joe Biden rig presidential elections." The appendix of the book includes 60 members of the "deep state" that Patel would target, including President Joe Biden, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Barr, and Wray. Trump called the book a "blueprint to take back the White House and remove these Gangsters from all of Government." Patel has little experience in law enforcement other than a brief tenure as a federal prosecutor. But he has spent many years monetizing his cartoonish loyalty to Trump. https://popular.info/p/kash-ing-in-the-money-making-schemes

“You have the makings of, you know, a not-so-slow motion authoritarian takeover of the United States government,” Nichols said.

#Kash #Patel, Donald Trump’s pick to head the FBI, is essential to the president-elect’s takeover,
and will allow him to use the full force of the U.S. government against anyone Trump decides is an enemy.

On Saturday, Trump nominated Patel, a former chief of staff at the U.S. Defense Department,
to replace the FBI’s current director Christopher Wray, who still has more than two years left in his 10-year term.
Trump appointed Wray in 2017 after unceremoniously firing James Comey.
During an interview on MSNBC Saturday, The Atlantic’s Tom Nichols voiced his concerns about Trump’s “incredibly dangerous” prospective cabinet of sycophants,
including #Tulsi #Gabbard,
#John #Ratcliffe,
#Pam #Bondi,
and now Patel—a champion of the president-elect, with his penchant for “deep state” conspiracy theories and making threats against the press.
To Nichols, Patel’s nomination demonstrates not only a direction for Trump’s second administration, but also an accelerating velocity.

FBI Director #Christopher #Wray and Donald Trump's team are planning for the possibility that the president-elect will replace Wray during the new administration, three people familiar with the matter told NBC News.

One person under consideration for Wray's job is Trump adviser #Kash #Patel, who is also being considered to lead the CIA, according to two other sources.

Wray, whom Trump appointed in 2017 to a 10-year term, enjoys leading the FBI and had intended to serve out his term, a source said.

But he's also preparing for the possibility that Trump will seek to replace him, according to a separate source.
All the sources spoke on condition of anonymity to recount sensitive discussions.
