About 13,000 satellites currently orbit the Earth, with that number predicted to skyrocket to 50,000 by 2030. Someday, these satellites will be decommissioned and burn up as they re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere. Is that a good thing for the environment @sciencefocus has more:

Concerning for space traffic management and the potential for space debris generation: the U.S. federal 'budget blueprint' would also end #TraCSS (Traffic Coordination System for Space) as we know it: “The #OMB document … proposes a transfer of the Traffic Coordination System for Space to a nonprofit or a private sector partner, which could be a boon for Elon Musk’s #SpaceX.”
