Axel Törneman
Swedish, 1880-1925
"Absinthe", 1902
Oil on canvas 🍸

Törneman was one of Sweden's earliest modernist painters. Born in Persberg, Värmland, he grew to work in several modernist styles, was one of the first Swedish expressionist artists, and became a part of the international avant-garde in art after embracing more abstract art styles in Germany and France that were evolving there during the early 1900s

This depiction of the former sultan of the Ottoman empire as an absinthe enthusiast is particularly interesting if we consider that Abdul Hamid II apparently did not drink alcohol as an adult.

On this, see, for example Abdulhamit Kırmızı's 2022 article "The Drunken Officials of Abdülhamid II: Alcohol Consumption in the Late Ottoman Bureaucracy" (journals.openedition.org/remmm)!

Another sketch about Abdul Hamid II by Paul d'Espagnat in "Le Sourire", this time from October 1908 - i.e. just a couple of months after the Young Turk Revolution! Abdul Hamid II states: "Oxygénée Cusenier, dear Sir, a pure marvel! In the three months that I have been taking it, it has had such an effect on me that from an Old Turk, I have become a Young Turk!"

@jbqueru I have thought about getting an #Absinthe #brouilleur or more commonly, an "absinthe fountain." The absinthe fountain is a key component of the traditional absinthe preparation ritual, which involves slowly dripping ice-cold water over a sugar cube placed on a slotted spoon (called an "absinthe spoon") into a glass of absinthe.

SAZERAC

rinse glass with absinthe
3 dashes Peychauds bitters
¼ oz demerara syrup
2 oz Sazerac rye

Garnish: lemon peel
Method: Use an atomizer to rinse your serving glass with absinthe. Combine the remaining ingredients in a stirring glass with ice and stir. Strain into the glass, express lemon peel, and use as garnish.

Another boozy stir for a cold winter night. This version of the legendary cocktail comes from the book Cure: New Orleans drinks and how to mix 'em, page 29. I finally found an affordable bottle of Sazerac in Germany and thought the titular cocktail was the logical test pilot. For the photo I also tested a new lighting setup. Not 100% happy with it, but you gotta start somewhere.

Delighted to see that includes _The Hour of Absinthe: A Cultural History of France's Most Notorious Drink_ by @drninastuder. Part of the _Intoxicating Histories_ series, _The Hour of Absinthe_ shows, to quote its tag line: how colonialism, madness, and murder turned the green fairy into the opium of the West. 🧚‍♂️

Another example: Absinthe was closely connected with life in the colonies in the French consciousness. In this front page of "Le Rire" from 1901 by Caran d'Ache (Emmanuel Poire) "The Explorers" have glasses of absinthe in front of them!

The connection to the colonies is made clearer by the "humorous" description underneath the image, which says: "If you knew what it's like to live with a camel..."

French military life in Algeria was - according to many observers - defined by absinthe. The caption below this 1882 caricature about Zouaves (i.e. Algerian regiments consisting mostly of Europeans) starts with: "The Zouave: Africa, the sun and... absinthe".

The caption further mentions North African women & green-eyed cats (one of which the zouave on the left is holding by its neck).

Our postcard from the #Absinthe pilgrimage is mentioned in the last feedback summer edition of Geschichten aus der Geschichte. @GeschichteFM

The episode “GAG298 Die Grüne Fee und der Absinthismus” was helpful and informative for our research.

Doctor Funk by Donn Beach

½ oz lemon juice
½ oz lime juice
¼ oz grenadine
½ oz demerara syrup
¼ oz absinthe
2¼ oz Black Pot Still Rum
1 oz seltzer

Garnish: pineapple frond
Method: Combine all ingredients with ice, shake or flash blend, open pour.

This one is one of my favorite tiki drinks. This version is from the Smuggler's Cove book, page 266. In it Martin Cate emphasizes that a funky Jamaican rum is needed to stand up to the hearty dose of absinthe. Jamaicans are far and away my favorite rums so this one always hits the spot for me. Pictured in the background is Hamilton's black pot still, which is the specific rum called for in this drink. However, if you don't have it on hand you can blend two rums (a black and a pot still) to land mostly in the same place, as is praxis in tiki anyway.
