As part of its ongoing war against both public services and media that reports on the Trump regime critically, the heads of NPR and PBS were dragged before a congressional subcommittee run by noted fascist freak Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), whose language made it clear the Trump regime is borrowing a playbook from one of the darkest periods of US history:

theguardian.com/us-news/2025/m

NPR and PBS testify in heated hearing of Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Doge panel

"NPR and PBS have increasingly become radical leftwing echo chambers,” said the Georgia Republican representative Marjorie Taylor Greene during her opening remarks, accusing NPR of having a “communist agenda”.

The hearing, called “Anti-American Airwaves: Holding the Heads of NPR and PBS Accountable”, was chaired by Greene who is head of a “delivering on government efficiency” group within the House oversight committee.

The Doge subcommittee hearing comes as the Trump administration, including the senior presidential adviser Elon Musk, wage a months-long campaign against public broadcasters and critical media more broadly. The FCC, led by a recent Trump appointee, opened an investigation into NPR and PBS in January. A day before the hearing, President Donald Trump said he would “love to” end public funding for the public broadcasters."

I know there's a tendency among "respectable" people to ignore everything Greene says and does because she's a raving nazi crank, and often a circus-level distraction from "serious" politics; but in this case I think doing so would be a grave mistake. Why? Because she just turned a govt efficiency panel into a House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) session right out of the darkest days of McCarthyism, before using the regime's reactionary grievances with NPR and PBS to further its war on media, public broadcasting, and programs funded for the education and edification of the American public.

If you think I'm going too far with that comparison, consider the title of the hearing (Anti-American Airwaves: Holding the Heads of NPR and PBS Accountable) and keep in mind that the purpose of calling it is ostensibly "efficiency." This is a funding recommendation panel. Greene doesn't have the authority to "hold the heads of NPR and PBS accountable" but before she even spoke a word, she'd already cast the networks' programing as anti-American and a danger to the nation.

If that doesn't convince you, consider the lines of questioning Greene pursued and the content of her arguments. She literally accused NPR of having a "communist agenda," cast critical reporting of the Trump regime as anti-American, and grilled PBS's Paula Kerger about LGBTQ+ content like it was some kinda crime.

"The attacks on PBS, meanwhile, heavily focused on opposition to LGBTQ+ content in its programming. “They are now part of transing children, brainwashing children about gender,” Greene said of PBS on Tuesday during an interview on the rightwing channel Newsmax.

Greene repeatedly attacked PBS during the hearing over claims that it featured a drag performer on one of its shows, holding up a poster of the performer who she described as “child predator” and “monster.”

Folks, this is an official representative of the govt seriously arguing that showing a fully-clothed drag performer singing a children's song is an anti-American plot to "trans" and "brainwash" US children. No really; and she accused the singer of being a child predator without evidence to boot. She also accused both networks of being a "radical leftwing echo chamber" which would be an absurd comment on its face given the milquetoast, barely left of center content found on both networks, if not for the inclusion of the sinister-sounding word "radical" and the larger context of the hearing.

Please keep in mind that after seizing control of the typically independent FCC (see article at the top of this thread), Trump minion and Project 2025 author Brendan Carr immediately opened up clearly ideological investigations into NPR and PBS, and Downmarket Mussolini himself has been threatening to revoke the licenses of ostensibly "liberal" media that criticizes him or reports on his unlawful activities, including PBS and NPR. In that context, all of this, including this hearing, is designed to manufacture consent for ideological policing every bit as reactionary and malicious as the HUAC and McCarthyism.

In terms of spending, the government doesn't provide very much of NPR and PBS's funding; which only goes to demonstrate the purpose of this hearing was ideological policing, not govt efficiency. Because these people use the whole cow however, Green still seized the moment to advocate for dismantling the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, even though it won't shut down NPR or PBS, because doing so will shut down local media and these fascists want you ignorant and reliant on their propaganda outlets for the news.

No, I am definitely not a fan of #Boebert and #Greene, and you certainly chose to misinterpret the message despite its obviousness.

I pointed out the difference between how #Republicans treat their own vs how #Demnocrats do.

Was there sufficient reason for #AlFranken to lose his senate seat, or for #AlGreen to be ejected and censured?

Democrats are playijng by "rules" that have ceased to apply for more than a decade, and that's why they keep losing.

While all hell was breaking loose during an Oval Office meeting between Presidents Trump and Zelensky on Friday, conservative reporter Brian Glenn—a.k.a. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s boyfriend—took a moment to question the Ukrainian president’s choice of clothing.

Who knows what the meltrate was in Gt, the Atlantic freshwater input per year (or 100yrs) in paleoclimate, before an AMOC stop or strong slowdown?

Glacier and sea ice from East Canada and West Greenland, and on the other AMOC limb, NE-Greenland with Scandinavia and the British isles.

I would like to be able to compare today's melt rate to past incidents of ice melt and AMOC slowdown / stop.
And to be able to plot data along other proxy time series to get a feel for things.

Today's data is given in Gt. So that's what I'd be after in paleoclimate data. Sverdrup is not so useful to me.

Today's Greenland melt can be 444 Gt yr in 2019 as per essd.copernicus.org/articles/1 by #Otosaka etal 2024
and on average 270 Gt/year as per State of the Cryosphere Report iccinet.org/statecryo24/ , based on #Greene etal 2024.

Thank you for sharing my question🙏! And for pointers!

essd.copernicus.orgMass balance of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets from 1992 to 2020Abstract. Ice losses from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have accelerated since the 1990s, accounting for a significant increase in the global mean sea level. Here, we present a new 29-year record of ice sheet mass balance from 1992 to 2020 from the Ice Sheet Mass Balance Inter-comparison Exercise (IMBIE). We compare and combine 50 independent estimates of ice sheet mass balance derived from satellite observations of temporal changes in ice sheet flow, in ice sheet volume, and in Earth's gravity field. Between 1992 and 2020, the ice sheets contributed 21.0±1.9 mm to global mean sea level, with the rate of mass loss rising from 105 Gt yr−1 between 1992 and 1996 to 372 Gt yr−1 between 2016 and 2020. In Greenland, the rate of mass loss is 169±9 Gt yr−1 between 1992 and 2020, but there are large inter-annual variations in mass balance, with mass loss ranging from 86 Gt yr−1 in 2017 to 444 Gt yr−1 in 2019 due to large variability in surface mass balance. In Antarctica, ice losses continue to be dominated by mass loss from West Antarctica (82±9 Gt yr−1) and, to a lesser extent, from the Antarctic Peninsula (13±5 Gt yr−1). East Antarctica remains close to a state of balance, with a small gain of 3±15 Gt yr−1, but is the most uncertain component of Antarctica's mass balance. The dataset is publicly available at https://doi.org/10.5285/77B64C55-7166-4A06-9DEF-2E400398E452 (IMBIE Team, 2021).

tldr: by adjusting #Greenland meltrate to actually observed accelerated rate which is underestimated in standard climate models, they are now able to explain the observed increase in SST and salinity in the South #Atlantic with a slowdown of the AMOC in the past decades , matching the slowdown rate calculated by #Rahmstorf 's former PhD student #Caesar 2018.
If you recall, that's the latitude in the S-Atlantic that #vanWesten etal 2024 found as prime location for early warning signal of an imminent AMOC collapse in their freshwater experiment.

By applying melt (but without the observed AND projected acceleration that #Greene et al 2024 notify us of nature.com/articles/s41586-023 ), Pontes' model now projects a total slowdown of 30% by 2040.
(Also noteworthy maybe that the authors pull the 2degree milestone forward to 2040, while some papers I read in 2018 still saw 2C sometime in the 2050s. But they're not the first researchers doing so that I came across.)

Meanwhile, #COP29 news falsely report a global consensus in coal phase-out. A journalist on Bluesky dug into the actual agreement and the countries listed.
First, it's not a global agreement.
Then either, the countries have no coal energy, or they have already long ago planned the phaseout so nothing new from them, either.
The single country with a new development in this coal agreement is Australia which announced to close 3 coal power plants ... sometime in the future...

Republican voters knew #Mark #Robinson was a bad man when they chose him.
Now they know he is a very bad man.
Yet North Carolina Republicans are doubling down.

Robinson has denied that the newly surfaced posts are his
— but without addressing any of the evidence showing that the postings match screen names he’s used, match his email address and match key biographical details.

⭐️To the G.O.P., the real problem was the report, not the facts.
The party issued a statement saying that “the Left can try to smear” Robinson “all they want” and “demonize him via personal attacks.”

What makes the situation all the more grievous is that Robinson is running as an outspoken evangelical.
One of his spokesmen, Mike Lonergan, has described him as “very bold and outspoken about his Christian faith.”

Both parties are vulnerable to nominating or electing the occasional crank,
but ♦️Donald Trump’s ascendance meant that a crank leads the party,
and the best way to join with him is to imitate him.

That’s how you get a Mark #Robinson, or a Marjorie Taylor #Greene, or a Lauren #Boebert, or a Matt #Gaetz.
The list goes on.

That’s how leaders change institutions.
They make them into images of themselves.

In this case, Trump has done so explicitly.
💥Almost all the worst figures in the Republican Party have ridden Trump endorsements to the top of their local pyramids.

Robinson received Trump’s endorsement and swamped his primary opposition.
Trump even called him “Martin Luther King on steroids.”

The lesson is simple:
🔸If you want more Mark Robinsons, vote for Donald Trump.

🔥It’s possible that the Republican Party is simply too far gone, at least for now.
A primary electorate that chooses Robinson over more reasonable candidates by 45 points
— and a party that blames “the left” for revealing that he’s even worse than anyone knew
— does not seem ready to change.

🆘 But unless and until the Republican Party reverses course
and purges MAGA from the party every bit as thoroughly as it has purged Reaganism,
American politics will remain unstable.

A coalition of decency
(who could ever imagine Nancy Pelosi and Dick Cheney voting for the same candidate?)
will have to continue to set aside profound differences for a larger purpose:
❇️ defending the American Republic against MAGA’s nihilistic rage.

The GOP, already the party of sexism, is getting more gratuitous with its toxic masculinity.
Everywhere one looked at the convention, Republicans were exalting maleness
with an ardor that reads as "defensive" to outsiders but appears to be a convincing display to those inside the MAGA cult.
The overcompensation led to a grand finale featuring both pro wrestler #Hulk #Hogan and Ultimate Fighting Championship president #Dana #White,
rather than the traditional activists and politicians one hears at a convention.
Hogan declared Trump a "#gladiator,"
which should be funny applied to a doughy senior citizen caked in make-up, -- but appears to have been taken at face value by the RNC crowd.
Along with the James Brown song, Trump used "#Macho #Man" by the Village People as intro music, still indifferent to the irony of the song.

The boys club vibe spread throughout the convention.
Women were welcome, but only as support staff.
A few years ago, female provocateurs like #Greene were riding high, feeling like they could troll their way into MAGA stardom like their male counterparts.
The message being sent at the GOP's 2024 convention:
It's time for the gals to take a back seat.
#Kari #Lake, the current GOP senate candidate for Arizona and failed gubernatorial candidate, did not have a good convention.
Her speech was early in the evening on Tuesday, and poorly attended.
Lake, a former newscaster, is not getting the juice she seemed to think would be hers if she rebranded as a MAGA loudmouth.
She did her best, dropping the #Sarah #Palin-associated phrase
"mama bear" liberally throughout her speech.
She even tried to rile up the crowd by yelling "fake news" at the media section.
The two-minute hate fell flat.
There were only a handful of reporters even sitting in the press section. Even Fox News declined to air her speech.

Many Republicans don’t align with new messages at GOP convention

Monday’s program was chock full of efforts to reach groups that don’t generally align with Republicans,
from Latino and Black voters to union members.

But the messages used to accomplish that task were often discordant —
with Trump’s usual mien,
with one another,
with those of the party’s base.

And while the party has become defined much more by “Trump” than any set of policies,
that can’t help but create some tensions.

The big one Monday concerned the party’s increasingly #isolationist posture.

After Trump picked as his running mate one of the most prominent skeptics of Ukraine aid, Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio,
— Vance once said he didn’t “really care” what happened to Ukraine
— a succession of speakers delivered remarks in that vein.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor #Greene (Ga.) 🔸criticized aid to “foreign nations,”

while tech investor David #Sacks ♦️blamed the U.S. government for provoking Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by pushing NATO expansion.♦️

While much of the GOP base is skeptical of Ukraine aid,
a healthy segment of it remains #hawkish on the war.

Recent polling shows more than 4 in 10 Republicans believe that the amount of aid to Ukraine has been not enough or “about right.”

After the most recent Ukraine aid package passed, a poll showed Republicans leaned against it, but not a majority or even by a huge margin.

While 44 percent opposed the aid, 30 percent supported it.

And in contrast to Sacks’s comment, a Chicago Council of Global Affairs poll last year showed 🔹fewer than four in 10 Republicans blamed either NATO (37 percent) or the United States (32 percent) for Russia’s invasion. 🔹

Republicans also still lean in favor of NATO and even Ukraine’s membership in it.

The messages are also somewhat at odds with Trump himself.

While he has projected skepticism about Ukraine aid, he didn’t really fight the most recent package, and he has said that Ukraine’s survival is “important to us!”
