"Whenever the #author and #playwright Samantha Ellis tries to define her heritage to people, she often finds them correcting her. “So many times I’ve said I’m an #Iraqi #Jew and been… told ‘you mean you’re mixed’ or ‘which parent is which?’ or just ‘how weird’,” she writes in her richly detailed #memoir, in which she explores the complex, centuries-old history of the Iraqi-#Jewish community and its vanishing language, #Judeo-Iraqi #Arabic.

The daughter of Iraqi-Jewish #refugees who came separately to #London with their families during periods of persecution for the community in #Baghdad, Ellis is moved to seek out #stories, expressions and objects that will fill some of the gaps in that #history when she realises that she lacks the vocabulary to pass on the language of her childhood to her own young son."

Today In Labor History April 7, 1870: German-Jewish anarchist and pacifist, Gustav Landauer, was born. He was friends with, and influenced, the Jewish philosopher Martin Buber. He served as the Commissioner of Enlightenment and Public Instruction during the short-lived Bavarian Soviet Republic, during the German Revolution of 1918–1919, but was killed when the republic was overthrown. He was also the grandfather of film director, Mike Nichols (The Odd Couple, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf and The Graduate).

Ty Alhadeff, JIMENA’s Director of Education, has been featured in Conversations Journal, Issue 45, published by the Institute for Jewish Ideas and Ideals. In his article, Lessons from the Sephardic and Mizrahi Traditions, Ty offers a powerful overview of JIMENA’s educational vision and the transformative work we are doing to ensure Sephardic and Mizrahi history, identity, and voices are fully represented across Jewish and public education.

From launching our groundbreaking Sephardi & Mizrahi Education Toolkit to leading fellowships and building partnerships with public schools and national institutions, this article is a testament to how far our community has come—and how much more we’re ready to do.

We invite you to read and share this important piece as we continue to expand inclusive, representative Jewish education for all.

With gratitude, The JIMENA Team

Trump's Moves to Undercut Wind Power
How Activists Can Respond

Jewish Earth Alliance Monthly Briefing
Tuesday, April 15th, 2025
5:00 pm PT / 8:00 pm ET

REGISTER HERE: us02web.zoom.us/meeting/regist

President Trump's hostility towards offshore wind power is legendary and once in office, he wasted no time before wreaking havoc on the industry. He issued an executive order that would deny the country access to a renewable energy industry that was growing at a healthy clip and helping reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. (More details are below, in TAKE ACTION NOW.)

At our briefing, we'll delve into the state of offshore wind power in the US, Trump's moves to thwart it, and then contact the administration in support of wind power. The meeting will start with Jewish wisdom from Julia Emden, a Jewish educator, Iyengar-based yoga instructor and movement/expressive artist.

EIGHTY YEARS SINCE THE 1945 TRIPOLITANIA POGROM

It is 80 years since 130 Libyan Jews were brutally killed during three days in November 1945 in Tripoli and elsewhere in Tripolitania. Shops and homes were looted, synagogues burnt down, such as the Zawia synagogue shown here, and property destroyed. This tragic episode, which is hardly known, was followed by a second pogrom in 1948. Over 90 per cent of Jews participated in the Aliyah starting in 1949.

What happened exactly and what were the root causes? Oral historian Vivienne Roumani-Denn has made a study of these terrible events and gathered survivors’ testimonies.

Samantha Ellis’s mother tongue is dying out. An urgent need to find out more becomes an expansive investigation into how to keep hold of her culture – and when to let it go.

The daughter of Iraqi Jewish refugees, Samantha grew up surrounded by the noisy, vivid, hot sounds of Judeo-Iraqi Arabic. A language that’s now on the verge of extinction.

She will be in conversation with Lyn Julius about her new book ‘Chopping onions on my heart’ (The Judeo-Arabic equivalent of ‘Rubbing salt in the wound’).

American Jews really prefer Jewish Foyer not Jewish Lobby. Occasionally, Jewish Vestibule.

"An outspoken critic of #Israel who has said that the #US is “subjugated by the #Jewish lobby” was reappointed as the #UnitedNations’ Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Occupied #Palestinian Territories.

Excellent article on #DaraHorn's new children's #book and more!

"When are #children ready to encounter a #Jewish #history of persecution and slaughter?

One answer is provided during the seder itself, which often ends with the traditional song “Chad Gadya,” or one little goat in #Aramaic. It’s a “cumulative” song about a baby goat that is eaten by a cat, who’s killed by a dog, who’s beaten with a stick, culminating with the Angel of Death being slain by God. One interpretation is that the goat represents the Jewish people, and the climax of the song signals the redemption of the #Jews. It’s a dark theme smuggled into an upbeat, if macabre, children’s song.

Making light of the #seder’s darker themes is a #Passover tradition all its own, and Horn is on board with it.

“By the time children are old enough to appreciate [the darkness], they own the #story. They’re characters in the story, and they know that about themselves and that this is a story about us,” said Horn."
